Meet … Dr. Luis Diaz

Senior Consultant
Student Support Services and Retention

Dr. Luis Diaz is a native of Miami, Florida, of Puerto Rican parents who came to Miami in the 1950s.

He is a proud father of three and a grandfather of four. His parents instilled in him the importance of family, God, hard work, and a good education.

After graduating from High School at the age of 17, Luis went off to college in New York City. Seven years later he returned to his native, warm and sunny, Miami. Luis’ education is diversified. He has a Diploma in Biblical Studies (High Honors); an Associate in Business Administration and Management (Cum Laude); and a Bachelors in Communications (Magna Cum Laude). He also has received two Honorary Doctorates.

With a love for history, travel, and people, he has visited 20 states, and has been a part of missionary – teaching trips to Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

Communications and Education has been an integral part of Luis’ life for almost three decades. He has been involved in the instructional and administrative aspects of various institutions, ranging from Bible Institutes, private middle schools and high schools, to postsecondary career colleges. One area that has brought much personal satisfaction has been assisting students through a school’s Career Services Department. Successfully connecting single mothers with local affordable child care centers, thereby allowing them to attend college and complete their education, has brought joy and satisfaction to both Luis and his students. Helping a low income, uninsured student to find a community dental clinic to pull out an aching tooth and bring him much needed relief, has brought smiles all around.

Interpreting at public events such as college Graduations, has allowed Luis to use his bilingual skills (English / Spanish) to communicate to a cross section of the Miami community. It has also been an asset in his Radio career in both English and Spanish speaking stations.

Luis is an avid reader, especially of history and biographies. On any given Saturday, one may find him visiting the local public library; or, at a Barnes & Noble store, reading various books for hours on end, and then, to the chagrin of the bookstore owners – not buying a single volume.

One pastime that brings enjoyment and enlightenment to his life is simply to sit down with a family member, a friend, a student, even a newly met “stranger,” and just have a conversation. When meeting someone for the first time, one question Luis may probably ask from the get go, is, “Where are you from?” Why this question in particular? Because according to him, the best book one can read, is the up close and personal life of another individual, recognizing that humans are all “open letters” waiting to be read, if we just take the time to do so. That question opens “The Book” to that individual’s history (their biography). This question, as expressed by Luis, is an acknowledgement to the individual that, “You are important and I want to get to know something about you.” This begs the question sometimes, “Hey Luis, are you writing a book?” Well, after all, Luis is a Communications Major.
